Finally! I managed to get my very own blog on the life of a doctor. I received 2 hugs from patients today! I used to frown at the thought of hugging a patient; not because of the risk of catching some strange disease but that it may interfere somehow with the doctor/patient relationship. Today, the first hug was from a man, who is a caring and doting son to his elderly mother. I took extra time to counsel him and help him manage her health care plan. I was flattered by his complement that I was the best doctor in town. At the end of the visit he gave me a hug. I would never initiate a hug with a patient but when the patient offers, it would be cruel to refuse. It’s probably the ultimate gesture of thanks one can receive. The second hug was from a patient of another doctor I saw only once for a cat bite. I don’t remember giving her any extra special attention. She asked the medical assistant for me to come and see her and showed me her healing hand. I was pleased with the healing process and reassured her that it would continue to heal. After she saw her regular doctor, she stopped by my desk to give me a hug. I was surprised but thankful again. The medical assistant later told me that she had been very impressed with me and that I should be honored because she used to be a very prominent university professor. I am honored and grateful for the gratitude hugs I received today. I am still not sure what I did to deserve them because as a doctor, I’m just doing my job.
